Hi Paintin’ pals!
Spring flew by in a breeze and here we are in the midst of a fabulous summer. Hasn’t the weather been amazing?
For the first time ever I have been growing flowers. I find myself reading gardening articles and looking up on the internet how to prune and fertilize my new little charges. I can see why some people become obsessed over their flowers! Every weed is on my hit list and I take great delight in yanking their roots out of the ground.
I’ve also taken some lovely garden photos and look forward to turning them into paintings so I can enjoy my flowers in the winter months too. Of course I will share those paintings with you as well.
I invite you to spend a few moments with me in this newsletter. I am announcing new packet releases, information on the First Annual Canadian Seminar, SALES!!! and my upcoming travel schedule including pictures of the projects being taught - and other exciting news. |

| TEACHING PERMISSION |
I welcome anyone to teach my designs, in fact I encourage it.
Teachers please contact Mary (mary@maureenmcnaughton.com) for information on discounts on my products for your classes.
Just a reminder that the copyright statement for all of my projects is that -written permission must be obtained when teaching my designs. I can assure you that it is freely given.
It is unfortunate, but due to a serious copyright infringement on my work, my lawyer has advised me to follow the copyright laws to the letter. The process is simple and can all be done by email or post.
For the Teaching Permission form just send me (maureen@maureenmcnaughton.com) the teacher’s name, class date, host and location, number of students, and the title and file number of the project. Put your name in the subject of the email please.
Written permission must also be obtained before displaying on the internet or in a newsletter. Permission to Display requires a separate form. For that I need the same information plus the website address. I will send you the completed forms to sign and date and you will return it to either Mary or me for our files |
| THE FIRST ANNUAL CANADIAN SEMINAR - SEPTEMBER |
The response has been fantastic!
This promises to be a fun time as we all get together again to do what we enjoy the most - fellowship and learning while growing in our skills. It’s not too late to go on the waiting list folks. I am thinking about holding two seminars here next year and the response to this year’s class will help me with that decision - so let me know what you think.
My friend Sandy G. From Chicago writes “Ajax will never be the same again!”
The folks who have signed up have received the picture of our inspiration painting some time ago - but I did want to share it with everyone. My goal for the seminar this year is to teach how I design companion pieces to complement a larger piece of artwork. We’ll start with some simple borders and symmetrical designs.
Then I will guide the students through their own designs and watch what develops. As you can see, we have many elements to draw from in this painting. |

For more information on this seminar and to go on the waiting list please click here.

TEACHING MEMORIES - CAN YOU HELP ME?
I’ve started on my memory album again, which I had let lapse when my life took an unexpected turn a few years ago. It was the love and support of my painting friends that kept me strong while my personal life went full circle.
Now that I am in such a happy place I would love to be able to make my painting memories complete.
Could you help me fill in that gap?
If you have anything written about myself or my seminars from the past four years would you be willing to share copies with me?
Sometimes my hosts have invited the local newspapers in to our seminar and I would love to have copies of those articles if possible.
Or maybe you kept something from a magazine or a newsletter - I would be ever so grateful. |

ATTENTION MACHINE EMBROIDERY FANS
I am very excited to announce that OESD has just launched a collection of my botanical florals for machine embroidery. It is called “Vintage Blooms - a Botanical Collection by Maureen McNaughton.”
Here is the link to this collection: http://www.embroideryonline.com/projects/inspiration.aspx?Sku=61026
OESD asked me to OK the finished embroidery of these flowers before the release of the CD to the market. I was truly amazed to see them transformed into beautiful embroidery. It brought back memories of years ago when I would fill the hours of motor home traveling (going from one seminar to another) by designing my own embroidery patterns which I would create by hand in satin stitch. I would tell myself that I was “painting with thread” and I had almost as many thread colours then as I have paint bottles now!
I hope you too will enjoy “painting these botanicals with thread” and please let me know how you plan to use them - quilts, pillows, framed?
More good news - look for a new collection of my birds designs from OESD coming soon! |

UPCOMING MAGAZINE ARTICLE
Life is settling down after the hectic pace of moving last year and resettling in my new home in Brampton with David. I am once again able to devote some time to magazine articles.
Look for my upcoming piece in issue four of the Decorative Painter. I chose a contemporary photo frame from Coyote Woodworks and painted it with a stylized rose, violets and faux finish over a Paynes Grey background. |

RECIPES
Have some fun with these great recipes and please send me any that you would like to share |
TIM’S JIFFY MIX/BROCCOLI BAKE
From: Margaret Deren Greensboro, NC
1 box Jiffy Cornbread mix
½ box frozen broccoli, defrosted and squeezed dry
½ onion chopped
2/3 cup cottage cheese
2 eggs ½ stick butter, melted Salt, pepper
Mix together and bake in 9x12 pan @350 app. 30 minutes or until surface cracks. |
TACKY-UPPY DINNER
From: Shirley Nan Ruchong, Eureka California
This recipe gets its name from the fact that this is a buffet dish where the ingredients are “stacked up” on the plate.
The mixture sounds really unusual, but it is wonderful! It is definitely worth a try. Serves about 8 - depends on how hungry everyone is and if there are a lot of guys eating - especially teenage guys!
Meat from 2 boned, whole chickens, cooked and chopped.
Reserve broth. (Mix some gravy into this to moisten for serving.)
4 cups uncooked rice - cook according to package directions.
2 1/2 cups of Chinese noodles (canned or in bag)
2 - 28 oz. Cans of crushed pineapple, drained.
1 1/2 cups toasted coconut
2 qt. of gravy (use reserved stock or make your own: add cream of chicken soup, milk and water according to directions. Thicken with corn starch mixed with water.)
2 bunches or green onions, finely sliced
1 pt. of finely sliced celery
1 lb. Of medium cheddar cheese
6 tomatoes, chopped
2 c mixed nuts, chopped
Prepare all the items as listed above.
Stack (layer) on your plate as follows (be careful - this can get out of hand!): rice, chicken, noodles, gravy, onions, celery, tomatoes, noodles, gravy, cheese, pineapple, coconut, and nuts. |
BETTER THAN SEX CAKE
1 chocolate cake mix
1 3-1/2 oz. box instant chocolate pudding
4 eggs
8 oz sour cream
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup water
1 4-oz pkg. German chocolate, grated
(it comes in the green box in the baking chocolate section)
1 6-oz pkg. Chocolate chips
Combine cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, sour cream oil and water and mix well. Stir in remaining ingredients and stir well.
Grease and flour a Bundt pan or two 10" rounds, etc.
Spoon in batter and bake in pre-heated 350-degree oven for about an hour or until tested done with a toothpick.
I usually ice with a rich buttercream icing and sometimes fill it with cherry filling. Just to increase the calories! |
