Hi Everyone,

Is it spring time where you live?

I look out into my backyard and see the first signs of the bushes and trees waking from their winter sleep. The robins have returned and thoughts of new flowers to plant in my garden are starting to form. And of course those thoughts turn to - let’s paint some new flowers too!!

This newsletter contains some new packet releases, upcoming seminar info, my HOOT classes and my travel schedule for 2012 and 2013.

MAUREEN’S SECOND ANNUAL
CANADIAN
SEMINARS

JUNE 2 - 5, 2011 (4 days)

OCTOBER 20 - 23, 2011 (4 days)
This seminar is still in the planning stages, so you know
it will be new and exciting.

Seats are filling quickly and we have folks travelling in from all over again (even Taiwan!).

I know this will be an exciting few days of painting and fellowship. Many are staying at the hotel, so I am sure the comradery will continue into the evening around the pool or out for dinner with new friends.

Here are the projects we are doing in June - why not join in the fun?

Russian Nesting Dolls

These little sweeties will find a home in your heart. I’d love to paint them on the actual carved dolls too, wouldn’t you?

Sunflowers Strokework

Sunflowers on a red background - very different for me!

This happy painting will be a welcome addition to any decor.

Please go to this link to find out more about the seminar arrangements.

When making hotel reservations be sure to mention the seminar, so you get the best rates.

Russian Troikas

Red Troika

Red Troika

The Russian meaning of Troika is “a sleigh drawn by three horses abreast,” and is often seen in the popular Russian fairy tale painting.

Paint the Red Sleigh Troika in class and also receive all the notes and photos for the Purple Sleigh Troika. After all - you need a matching pair, right?

I will supply all paints, media, thorough written instructions, 8" X 11" colour reproductions.

Plus I will provide coffee, tea and light snacks.

Many restaurants are nearby the hotel for lunch or you can bring your own.

Cost for four days: $425.00 US

(Canadian price will be determined at the time you register.
Currently the Canadian dollar is at par with the US dollar.)

Full payment is required upon registration.

Visa or Mastercard are accepted

NEW PACKETS - online now

Have you noticed how many painters are also quilting now?

The passion for both go hand in hand, and quilting is not just bedspreads anymore. Think of purses and jackets, wall hangings, pillows and table linens. Or do you just love the look of quilt designs and want to paint them on lamps, four sided boxes, baskets, canvas placemats or framed paintings?

I taught the following five new packets last November for S&S Brushstrokes.

That class was the first one to sell out!

So, enjoy these new designs and please let me know how you plan to use them.
I’d love to show what you’ve done with them in a future newsletter.

I’ve had some fantastic recipes sent in recently and a few painting tips I’d like to share with you.

Please, keep them coming.

Until we get together again, may your paint brushes always do the “happy dance”!

Hugs, Maureen

From Linda Oelrich Linda made these at a seminar and was kind enough to share the recipe - unbelievably delicious and way too easy to make!!!

POTATO CHIP COOKIES

1 lb. Butter ( no substitute )

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup chopped nuts

1 cup crumbled potato chips

3 1/2 cups flour

2 teaspoons vanilla

Cream butter and sugar and vanilla. Add flour nuts and chips. Drop by spoonfuls. Bake 350 for 15 to 20 minutes. Until golden brown on edges.

My oven took 19 minutes, so just watch and mark down how long your oven takes. Now make a big pot of coffee .....bon appetit!

From: my pal Kathy Dysert

BBQ CHICKEN

Put 4 or 5 boneless chicken breasts in a skillet, add a cup of catsup and a can of coke. Really!

Cook until chicken is done, take the chicken out and turn up the heat for about 10 minutes. Makes the most delicious BBQ sauce!

UNBELIEVABLE DESSERT

Layer 1/2 cup melted butter
24 oz. of applesauce
a yellow or white cake mix (dry),
14 oz. red hots in a crock pot and pour a can of root beer over the top.

You slow cook it on high for 6 hours and serve with whipped cream. Would also go nicely with vanilla ice cream too! This recipe was first shared on Tolenet

HOT BUTTERED RUM FREEZER MIX

1 lb. brown sugar
1 lb. powdered sugar
1 lb. butter
1 qt. vanilla ice cream
2 tsp. ground nutmeg
2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Soften butter and cream with sugars and spices. Add softened ice cream and mix well. Store in Tupperware container in refrigerator . Lasts six months. When ready to use, put about 2 heaping Tbs. in a cup, add jigger of rum and then fill with boiling water and stir well.

Sprinkle with a little nutmeg on top.

PAINTING TIPS

1. Speed Dotting: When doing many dots with a stylus too, put a squirt of the colour on your palette knife and hold in one hand by the painting as a “mini palette.” Saves lots of time.

2. Patterns on Curved Surfaces: Painting on curved surfaces can present a challenge when tracing on the pattern. We all have lots of sheets of graphite laying around. Trace your pattern onto the wrong side of the graphite sheet. Cut out along close to the pattern. This paper is so thin it shapes easily to the shape of your surface.

Tape in place and trace over the pattern lines with your stylus. Store with your pattern packet so it’s easy to find next time.

3. Getting Lost?: It’s easier to follow the notes in a packet or seminar if you put a dab of paint in the margin of the page at the step you just did.

4. Something’s wrong - what is it? Often we get so caught up with the colour that our eyes don’t see the value of the colours and we wonder why our painting looks flat.

Take a digital black and white picture or scan your painting in grey scale if possible and evaluate. With the colour gone, all you see is value so it is much easier to adjust

5. Saving your energy for another hour of painting: Have you noticed how much time we waste when we’re disorganized? It sounds simple but we’re all guilty of being so eager to start painting that we don’t organize our work station first. Something as easy as keeping our palette and brush basin on the same side as the hand we use will save countless minutes, not to mention preventing that annoying shoulder ache when the body says “quit” and we’re not ready to yet!

6. I love that colour - so much so that I’ve bought it now six times!!! DecoArt has a wonderful purse size colour chart that makes it easy to record what you have on stock when you go paint shopping.

7. Why are those dotted lines on the pattern, and numbers & letters too? I must confess, sometimes I forget to write on the pattern or in the instructions why all this information is on the pattern. I’ve put dotted lines within a shape to show you the width and curve of the strokes required to fill in the shape of the solid outlined shape. For example, a leaf may take five strokes (joined together) to fill in, but it is then treated as one.
