BRUSH NEWS

Starting with our next order of brushes, we will now have an extra protective coating on the handles to keep them pretty looking longer.

Now this doesn’t mean that you can leave them soaking in the brush basin. Water quickly goes up a brush handle and swells it, causing the paint to crack.

MAUREEN’S NEW WET PALETTE

Now, I am really excited about this new palette. The quality of the plastic is thick and flexible.

It cleans up beautifully with hot water. The lid snaps closed with four snaps and has a gusset for a snug and leak proof seal.

The lid continues to double as a second wet palette and we will still include the plastic board to cover when you have both lid and base going at the same time as palettes.

The size is 9" X 13" and you all know how valuable that extra inch will be when loading the brush. It will also include a chamois large enough for both palettes and 10 sheets of my 9" X 15" wet palette paper.

It will retail for $34.95. But as a special to my mailing list friends, you will have an introductory price of $29.95 until February 20,2009.

You will have to phone Mary for this special price at 519-843-5648. This is an amazing palette of the highest quality.

PALETTE PAPER

Due to the increased size of my new palette I have decided to increase the size of the wet palette paper to 9" X 15". At this size it can be trimmed to fit all the different sizes of palettes on the market today.

I will not increase the price, it continues to be just $3.95 for 25 sheets

COYOTE WOODWORKS SALE
JUST FOR YOU

Coyote Woodworks is offering a special 20% discount to just those of you on my mailing list from February 8 to 18. All you have to do is type “Maureen McNaughton” in the comments box to receive the discount.

As many of you know I fell last year and broke my arm, tore my rotator cuff and back injuries also had to be addressed.

My health had to come first so that I can continue to teach and do all that I love to do.

I have committed myself to a rigorous physio therapy regime and am seeing a number of specialists. I am happy to say that I am definitely seeing good results, but it is cutting into my painting time.

I do ask for your patience in the time it will take to get the projects designed this year. I also ask for your support and faith in me that I will continue to design colourful and delightful paintings that you will enjoy.

Don’t delay in your registration my friends

I have had to move the date of the September seminar to the following weekend because of a new family commitment. I do apologize if this has caused any inconvenience. Brenda Stewart’s seminar falls the following weekend so it may work out for some of you to stay and take in Brenda’s beautiful projects as well.

May 1-3 / August 21-23 / October 23-25
three dates available

This year I designed the window valances designed for me by Coyote Woodworks.

As you can see, I haven’t finished the trim at the bottom yet.

There are also smaller panels that will go between each valance, which will have a faux finish. But I did want you to see these paintings right away, so you can see the direction I am going this year.

Of course these patterns will also fit on any surface of your choosing.

This is a perfect seminar for anyone wishing an introduction to my style of painting. I promise, you will be very surprised at how easy it really is folks!

JACOBEAN DELIGHT

This style of painting is from the 1700's and is quite elaborate with intertwining flowers, leaves and vines.

It is always one of my favourite styles to design and as usual I have introduced my palette to this style.

Mirror image patterns are provided but most students will only be able to do one in class.

The surface is from Coyote Woodworks - just go to the section called Maureen’s seminar pieces.

ACANTHUS LEAFY SCROLLS

This is one of the hottest decorating motifs today!

Patterns are offered for a table runner and four placemats.

However, in class there is only time for either the runner or the placemats.

Each placemat is in a different colour scheme. Surfaces are available from Coyote Woodworks.

PAINTERS RECIPE FROM

By Chef Michael Lomonaco,
Porter House New York

I was just putting my latest pattern into one of my large 3 ring binders and was struggling to add it to the back.

I am almost ready for another Maureen binder but I figured I could get a couple more in this one.

It hit me that when I am setting up a binder to add a bunch of page protectors to the back and then when it is full I don't have to open it to put new patterns in.

ALSO... when I want to use a pattern out of the binder, don't remove the page protector it is in. Put it in a spare protector, kept in the pocket of the binder, and then when I'm finished put it back where it belongs.

You don't have to keep opening and closing the binder and that keeps the rings tighter and no hassling with trying to keep all the pages in.

This is so simple I am sure many have been doing it for years... I am slow and figure there are more like me out there too.

Serves 6 to 8

INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 1/2 pounds beef chuck stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 large onion, diced
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 bottles, 24 ounces, American Porter –rich dark ale, or any beer
2 cups low-sodium, beef broth
1/4 cup tomato paste
3 carrots, peeled and diced
3 parsnips, peeled and diced
2 stalks celery, diced 3 large red bliss potatoes, washed and diced
sea salt
freshly ground black pepper

Garnish: Grilled rounds of buttered country bread
DIRECTIONS
1. Put the oil and butter in a large, heavy-bottomed pot and heat it over medium-high heat.

Season the beef with salt and pepper. Add the beef to the pot in a single, not-too-tightly-packed layer and brown the beef well on all sides, approximately 8 minutes total.

Transfer the beef to a plate and set aside. This may be done in batches to brown all the beef evenly.

2. Add the onion and butter to the casserole and cook until golden and caramelized, approximately 15 minutes.

Sprinkle the onions with the flour and stir to combine well.

3. Return the beef to the casserole, add the porter ale, beef broth, tomato pasted diluted in 1 cup warm water, and bring to a boil.

Lower the heat and simmer 1 1/4 hours.

4. Add the carrots, parsnips, celery and potatoes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

Return to a boil then simmer for 45 minutes before serving with toasted or grilled country bread.
