Hello dear friends,

Well here we are the in January already, where has the time flown? I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends and are ready to begin a new year full of wonderful painting experiences.

Mid December I came home from a wonderful teaching trip to Taiwan hosted by Amy Hui-Mei Lin. Many of you know Amy from seminars that she has taken here at my studio and conventions. On days off she took me on tours of the rest of the country and the scenery is simply breath taking. What an extraordinary experience for me!

Unfortunately, when I returned home I suffered another herniated disc but am healing much quicker this time. But that did get me behind and I do apologize to all of you asking “where are the projects for 2008 and what are the dates?”

BUTTERFLY COLLECTION

September 15 -16

This piece was designed for the 2007 Colour Sense Seminar and was such a success that many who could not attend asked if I could repeat it as a project class for 2008. I did it on Coyote Woodworks Lazy Susan #LS400. There are 8 different and very colourful butterflies in each removable section of the lazy Susan.

Water Lilies

I haven’t painted a water lily in over twenty years and I am “so” ready to do one again. I’ve been researching and they come in so many beautiful colours. I can hardly wait to get started on this one

Red Hibiscus

After my trips to Cuba and Taiwan I have so many pictures of Hibiscus from every angle. Their petals appear as fragile as tissue paper and nestled in the green leaves of the bushes the colour just jumps out. I may add a yellow one as well, we’ll just have to see where the creative urge takes me!

Floral Bouquet

I envision this painting as quite large with many different flowers, reminiscent of the Victorian bouquet, with roses as the main flowers. However, mine will have my the brighter hues that I love so much

Amaryllis

This flower, which many associate with Christmas, belongs to the lily family, with it’s typical long stem erupting at the top with beautiful flowers. Now you can enjoy yours all year long!

Jacobean Design

This style of painting is from the 1700's and is quite elaborate with intertwining flowers, leaves and vines. It is always one of my favourite styles to design

Acanthus Leafy Scrolls
This project will be offered in a variety of colour schemes and is pure fantasy - yet is one of the hottest decorating motifs today.

Three Botanicals

My series of botanicals for the last two years have been almost as popular as the brush stroke clinics have been. In true botanical style, each flower will be  shown as realistically as possible. However, you know they will be done with brush strokes! I haven’t decided yet exactly what the flowers will be, but am interested in doing a group of violets in pink, violet and white. And a wild rose would also be a nice addition. Any suggestions for the third flower?

MAUREEN’S NEWS WITH THE SOCIETY OF DECORATIVE PAINTERS

HOME TO THE HEARTLAND SEMINAR

In just a few days I will be teaching two classes at the SDP Offices in Wichita Kansas. I hope to see many of you there.

SDP PRESIDENT’S COMMENDATION AWARD

I hope you’ve had a chance to look at pages 12 and 13 in your last issue of the Decorative Painter to see the wonderful write up about Jo Sonja and myself receiving this award from Past President Darla Foreman. It was such a shock to me to hear my name called out and after that everything was a blur. I look at that beautiful crystal award and it still seems like a dream to be included in this special honour.

2008 SDP TAMPA PRE-CONFERENCE SEMINAR

I will be doing a two day seminar pre-conference seminar (Saturday and Sunday) sponsored by DecoArt and Houston Art Inc. Both Sandy Scales and Sally McAloon will be assisting me in this class, both excellent teachers. This class is filling quickly so don’t hesitate to sign up.

2008 SDP TAMPA CONFERENCE

I am looking forward to teaching four classes at this conference, once again with my excellent teaching assistants Sandy Scales and Sally McAloon. We will have a new audio visual set up so everyone in the class will be able to see even the tiniest detail.

DISCOUNT ON PACKETS AND SUPPLIES FOR TEACHERS

Many of you might not know that I give a 50% discount to all teachers who purchase the project packets from me for their students in the class they are teaching. I will include a free packet for the teacher as the ones you get will be the most up to date version of the project. Often when teaching I may come up with a better way to paint the project, or maybe I’ve found some errors from the original. So you will want to teach with the newest version of the project that you have chosen to teach your students. I will also give the teacher a 40% discount on any supplies needed for that class.

I do not give discounts to chapters or groups because I feel we must all support our teachers and shops. Without them, we all lose. So please do all you can to support your local shops and teachers.

SHIPPING
Shipping will now be charged on all orders. In the past I was able to absorb  this expense on some items. However, with all the cost increases from my manufacturers this is no longer possible. I will not charge a handling fee, just the actual cost I am paying to ship the items to you.
Mary will add this fee to your invoice. You can always call Mary after placing your order and she can give you the approximate cost depending on the weight of your order and where it is going. Be assured we will ship as inexpensively as possible.
Thanks for your understanding. This will take affect February 1, 2008

As always, I’d like to leave with a few painting tips and recipes from your fellow painters.

Until I see you again,

Maureen

From Linda Myers
Extending The Use of Your Paper Towels

I buy Viva soft paper towels in Select-a-Size.  I then cut the roll in half using a very sharp knife (not serrated).  When cutting the roll, try to not saw through it, but rather push the knife in one fluid cut from tip to handle (obviously I use a large kitchen knife). This makes for a nice size piece of paper towel with little or no lint to keep by your pallet.  If you get it wet or get it in your paint, you are only throwing away ¼ sheet of towel instead of the whole sheet of a regular sized paper towel.

From Louise Bakke
I copy patterns that I am going to paint on Vellum paper, then you do not have to trace them. This saves time and is more accurate, than tracing them by hand on tracing paper.
From Marcia Martin
I was recently getting ready to teach a painting project in which I needed to transfer the pattern to numerous surfaces.  Not wanting to have to trace my pattern more than once, I layed a piece of waxed paper over the tracing before I used my stylus to transfer the pattern.   Doing this allowed me to transfer 20 patterns without tearing my original tracing.
From Sandy Scales
When I try to figure out brush sizes for your strokework packets that I have chosen to reduce, I slip the reduced pattern into a heavy-weight clear plastic sleeve.  I squirt out a puddle of hand sanitizer (Purell or similar) onto the plastic sleeve.  I load the brush in the hand sanitizer and experiment with various brush sizes by pulling strokes onto the plastic sleeve with the reduced pattern showing through until I find the brushes that are suitable for the reduced size.  The hand sanitizer cleans the brushes of any residual acrylic paint and allows me to work out the brush sizes in any room of the house without the fear of getting paint on my furniture.

Unbelievably Good and Easy Cookies From Nancy Focardi
This is so simple, you won't believe how good they are!
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1  8 oz pkg.  cream cheese (I used the 1/3 less fat variety)
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 (18.5 oz) box devils food cake mix

Cream butter and cream cheese, blend in egg and vanilla.  Add dry cake
mix about 1/3 at a time mixing well after each addition. Chill 30
minutes.

Drop by scant teaspoons onto ungreased baking sheet.  Bake at 375
degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.  makes 6 to 8 dozen.  Makes a good soft
cookie.

Hints from Nancy:  Use any flavor cake mix, roll dough in waxed paper
before putting in fridge and just slice off little hunks instead of
making spoonfuls, use parchment baking paper on the cookie sheet....
they won't stick and there is no messy pan to wash!
