Hi Folks,

What a wonderful SDP Conference we had in Tampa this year! The weather was a little hot for this northern girl - got a sunburn from walking one block to the convention hall. But, it was well attended and the trade floor was busy. My classes were full and everyone was so excited to learn this tipping technique. Even my class on Saturday afternoon had energy to spare - in fact they actually finished the project!

SDP Brush Kit Special

I was in Painter's Paradise booth on the trade floor and we sold out of brushes in the first two hours. Isn't that a nice problem to have?!

But that got me thinking that maybe we should offer these specially priced brush kits to everyone on my mailing list.

We have four different brush kits:
Rounds 3, 5, 7 - $15.95 (Reg. $16.90)
Rounds 4, 6, 8  - $16.95  (Reg. $18.00)
Pointed Philberts 4, 6, 8 - $15.95  (Reg. $17.70)
Liners #5/0 short and long / #0 short and long - $12.95 (Reg. $15.30
)

SDP Certification

Unfortunately I had to leave the general meeting before the certification results were announced, and didn't even get a chance to go and see the display - but word did get to me about two friends who passed a milestone:
Barb Jenkins CDA, a fellow Canadian passed her Master Still Life. Hooray!!! I told Barb that she passed the most difficult board, but she said that I had passed the most difficult board. Goes to show that none of them are easy.
Jean Grommon MDA, who has been a friend since the early Extrav days - is now an MDA. I am so proud of Jean.

Guest Teachers 2005
Register On-Line

Helan Barrick MDA June 16 -19

We still have a few seats left in this fabulous seminar. I can hardly wait, and
what an honour to have Helan in our studio. Don't miss this opportunity to study
with one of our master teachers. Helan's technique for painting children is uniquely
hers and we are so lucky that she will be coming here to share it with us. All
paints are supplied and you are welcome to bring whatever surface you wish. Join
us for great fellowship and divine food.

Johnnie Liliedahl October 4 - 6
Story Time

We have a few seats available in this class. Johnnie is an unbelievably teacher, who shows us how to paint in the style of the Old Master Painters. She assures me that intermediate acrylic painters will do great in her class. Although it is in oils, Johnnie's approach is so different from today's traditional oil painting, that we are all starting on the same footing. One of the most valuable things I have learned from studying with Johnnie is - put the right colour in the right place, and it doesn't matter what technique you used to put it there.
All paint, media and great food are here, waiting for you to join us
.

Bobbie Takashima October 21 -23

One day I looked up Bobbie's phone number in the SDP directory and called to see if she would like to come here to teach. That first time was many years ago and from that a great friendship has blossomed. Bobbie is an acrylic painter with a relaxed, fine art approach. Learn about colour, design and her signature technique while painting two delightful projects that are sure to tickle your heart. We are happy to supply the all paint and media and promise to feed your happy tummies! Please bring your own surface.

Discontinued DecoArt Colours
Unfortunately DecoArt has stopped producing some of the colours that I have used in many of my packets. So I have worked out recipes on how to make them.

Magazine Articles

Now that I have finished working on the book (will be released March 2006) I can focus on getting more magazine articles done for you. I hope you had a chance to paint the Tiger Lily basket I had on the cover of the last Decorative Artist Workbook, and also the Jacobean Floral cake plate that I painted for the last Decorative Painter.
In the future, look for articles in these two great magazines, plus a Brush Stroke Series in Paintworks Quick and Easy and more articles in Paintworks and Painting.

I am busy now working on submissions for the 2006 SDP Conference in Nashville Tennessee June 6 - 10. So, I will leave you with some great Painting Tips and fast but delicious recipes from fellow painters.

Hope to paint with you soon,
Maureen

We are working on organizing all the Painting Tips and Painter's Recipes from all the past newsletters so we can put them on my web site in their own special sections. - Keep checking the site
Painting Tips
More on Bee Bees for Mixing Paint
Donna Frintzilas wrote to say that  her good friend Lee Crout was actually the one who gave me the great tip for putting 2 stainless steel bee bees in your bottle of paint. Shake the bottle and these two little bee bees make the mixing so quick and thorough. Well, this tip resulted in more feed back than any other tip so far.

Here's what others had to say:
From Val Goulet, Ontario Canada: her friend Sue reports that couldn't find the bee bees in the craft store but did find Daisy 4.5 mm steel air gun pellets for $1.94 in the sporting goods section at Walmart. They are in a locked cabinet, so you have to ask for them.

Another painter said she tried those small glass stones you put in vases for flower arranging, and they worked great too.

If you get Ultra Gloss Enamels on your clothes
From Rosemary Reynolds, DecoArt, Inc.
Our design dept. suggests  a product called, "OOP'S".  It has even been know to take out dried Patio Paint from clothing. But Rosemary advises that you test the product on and inside seam or hem to see how it will react to the natural colors or fibers in the clothing.

Acrylic Paint on Clothing Challenge
Please send me your best tip on this problem - it's one we all have!

Basecoating with Metallic Gold Acrylic
From Andree Brunette Ontario Canada

Metallic gold or any metallic paint is very transparent and can take so many coats for opaque coverage. So I  basecoat first with regular acrylic paint that is close to the same colour. For example, before I apply DecoArt Glorious Gold, or Jo Sonja Pale or Rich Gold - I will first basecoat the area with DecoArt Americana DA09 Antique Gold. Then the metallic gold covers in just one coat.

From Maureen: Try this great idea when basecoating with any transparent colour.

Painters Recipes

Cashew, Shrimp & Pea Salad
From Liz Bishop in Arizona USA

1-1/2 c salted, roasted cashews
20 oz pkg frozen small peas, thawed and drained
2 stalks celery, sliced thin
3/4 pound cooked small shrimp

Combine the above ingredients. Make Dill Dressing as follows:
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dry dill, minced.

Mix Dill Dressing and stir into salad. Serve with crackers.

Vidalia Onion Soup
From Betsy Griner, Virginia USA

Betsy sent me her entire cookbook of family recipes and the most difficult thing was to just choose one - I couldn't stop reading! But Vidalia onions are in our supermarkets now and I know what I am making for supper tonite.

3 pounds Vidalia onions cut in rings
48 ounce canned beef stock
2 cups Asiago cheese
2 cups grated Swiss Cheese

1/2 cup flour
8 slices of French or sour dough bread
1 stick butter
1 cup cooking sherry
salt and pepper to taste

Melt butter in large stockpot and sauté onions for 10 - 15 minutes, stirring often until browned. Sprinkle the flour over the onions coating evenly and cook 3-5 more minutes. Add stock and bring to boil. Add sherry and simmer one hour. Toast bread.
Ladle soup into 8 ovenproof bowls. Place one slice of toasted bread in each bowl. Sprinkle cheese on top and melt under the broiler until cheese is bubbly and starts to brown.
