February 2006 |
|
Dear painting friends, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, are well rested and ready to start painting. This newsletter contains all the information for our 2006 Studio seminars. But, first I would like to share some other news with you. |
|
SDP BREAST CANCER AWARENESS FUNDRAISING As many of you know, I was asked to do a painting for SDP that will be used to help raise money for breast cancer awareness. Tickets for a chance to win the framed painting are available at just $1.00 each on the SDP website. You can also purchase tickets at the SDP Nashville Convention in June, and other national shows where SDP will have a booth. The draw will be held in November. SDP has also produced a beautiful cloisonne pin of this painting, and these too are available on the SDP web site and at convention. They are only $5.00 + shipping and handling. Check page 7 of the 2006 Jan/Feb issue of the Decorative Painter to see the pin and read all about it. Don’t you think that this is an affordable gift that would be a joy to give to all your painting friends? |

MAUREEN’S PACKETS/PROJECT BOOKLETS Beginning January 1 2006, all colour pages and photographs in my packets will be stamped with an embossed seal authenticating it as being an original packet that we have produced. Unfortunately, we have been made aware that unauthorized copies of my packets are being sold on the internet and at shows. Please remember that some vendors will of course still have packets that they purchased from us last year, that will not be embossed. But if ever you are in doubt, please feel free to contact us. |

GIFT CERTIFICATES For the first time we offered gift certificates on our web site this past Christmas and they were a huge success. It seemed to be the perfect gift for family members, friends and even employers to give to you! We’ve decided to keep them on the site - for Valentine’s Day, Birthdays, Mother’s Day. So, be sure to put them on your wish lists. You can use them for anything on our web site, even Maureen’s seminars. |
MAUREEN’S PAINTING GALLERY Another welcome addition that many of you took advantage of over Christmas. Please keep checking this page as new paintings will be added from time to time. |
MAUREEN’S NEW BOOK - THE BRUSHSTROKE HANDBOOK I just received my advanced copy and I am so pleased with this book. It will be very convenient to use with the hard cover and inbound spiral, which allows it to open out flat on the table. This book is perfect for you to teach yourself brushstrokes with both round and flat brushes, in an easy step by step manner. It has over 50 small projects with each one using under ten colours. Now, you know that with my love for colour this was a huge challenge for me! But I learned so much in the process. |
|
Teachers will love this book for their classes because they can introduce a stroke with a small project that uses just that stroke. Perfect for a three hour class. Then there are projects using just two to three strokes, 20 different borders, and 6 bonus projects combining many of the elements from the book in different colour schemes.

PAINTING MAGAZINE I am sure that many of you know that Painting Magazine (originally Decorative Arts Digest) has published it’s last issue. It is an honour to have my Bleeding Hearts painting on the cover of this issue. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for this magazine. In February 1986 Beth Beth Browning, the founding owner and editor of Decorative Arts Digest (DAD), found me demonstrating in my booth at a ceramic convention in Orlando Florida.
|
Jim and I had been travel teaching brushstrokes in the ceramic market for the previous 13 years. I had only learned about SDP the year before. Beth invited me to the DAD offices for an interview and there I was on the cover of the May issue a few months later. Beth had opened the door for me to the decorative painting market, and for that I am eternally grateful. Thought you might like to see my first and last cover on this very special magazine. |

OTHER 2006 MAGAZINE ARTICLES Paintworks Quick and Easy : I am presently contributing a series of six articles introducing brushstrokes to the beginner painter. The first installment was in the March 2006 issue. |
|
GREATEST HIT - SEMINAR POLL The winner of the contest was Annie Pincus. I put all the entries into a hat and drew Annie's e-mail. Congratulations Annie- expect your prize of Maureen McNaughton Brushes in the mail soon. I will announce the results of the most popular projects in the next newsletter |
I MADE A BOO-BOO I just found out that one of the mixes I gave you for the discontinued DecoArt American Acrylics had the colours reversed. Will you please change it to the following: |
![]() Eilean Donan Castle |
The plans are taking shape and we have many returning for their second and third time with us on our tour to this historic and breath taking country. Claudia Nice will show you how to keep a sketch journal of all the sites, and you will also do a wonderful painting of the famous Eileen Donan Castle. A perfect reminder of your time in Scotland. Then you will spend two days doing strokework with me. We’ll do pink roses and violets, and white orchids with pink coral belles. |
2006 SHOWS AND CONVENTIONS
|
|
The way the dates fall for holidays, shows and conventions this year have left us with fewer weekends than usual for planning seminars here in our studio. So, for this year we will slow down a little. You can register online, by phone, fax or mail. If registering by post, the envelope must be postmarked no earlier than March 1. |
|
ROS STALLCUP - JUNE 16 - 18 Ros will be teaching us three beautiful projects, which she invites you to paint on any surface. Luscious fruit, delicate roses and ribbons and a serene garden scene are the projects we have selected. Background colours for the fruit and roses can be your choice. |

DAVID JANSEN - SEPTEMBER 8 - 10

CLAUDIA NICE - OCTOBER 13 - 15 Claudia’s classes have been such a treat to host. Claudia delivers so much more than just painting a project. She is the respected expert on pen & ink and watercolour, and has authored many books with North Light. Claudia has perfected her technique and has made it so learner friendly. In the playful kitten project you will learn how to paint fur and the distinctive features of beautiful cat eyes..Wild violets are also part of this painting, and I know you could find many uses for just the violets alone!

MAUREEN’S SEMINARS THE 2006 BRUSHSTROKE CLINIC Dates: May 26 to 28 / June 23 - 25 / August 25 - 27 / October 20 - 22 |
|
Each year I design a new brushstroke clinic and it has been one of the most popular seminars that we run in our studio. Last year’s clinic was taught here four times, and we could have easily filled a fifth and sixth class! This year we are reserving four dates and there just isn’t room in the calendar for a fifth date, so don’t delay in registering for this class. |
|
This years clinic will suit a variety of surfaces. One of the surfaces I’ve used for two of the projects is my favourite plaque from Coyote Woodworks. Janet also designed a beautiful shelf which I used for these same two projects. To see the shelf click on this for Coyote Woodworks. |
The pointed comma project will fit on any 8" surface. Mine is painted on a lid to an ivory gravy pan from Painters Paradise. This project was originally designed for the 2006 HOOT convention and they have graciously allowed me to teach it here.

DAFFODILS, TRILLIUMS, AND POPPIES - OH MY!

PINK TRILLIUM - AROUND THE CORNER Of course, you don’t have to paint them around the corner as I have done on this tin wall container - but it was fun! I plan to do a second pattern for those of you who wish to use a flat surface. The trillium is our provincial wild flower and you will find it in wooded areas in the spring. They are so named because each flower has three petals, three sepals and three leaves. |
