THE 2005 BRUSH STROKE CLINICMAY 13 - 15 We will run this seminar three times and will try to find additional time slots if demand warrants. Last year’s clinic was taught here four times! The Brush Stroke Clinic is designed such that each project focuses on just a few related strokes. I have always felt it is much more fun and definitely more practical to practice your strokes within the context of a design instead of boring rows on paper. This years clinic will suit a variety of surfaces but I used a wonderful piece designed by Coyote Woodworks just for this seminar. It is a square container with a lid and it has removable panels on the four sides. How ingenious! You can always paint the other side of each panel later on with holiday inspired designs! Each pattern fits a surface with a minimum size of 6" across by 8" high. I still have to design something for the lid to complete this project and will post a picture of it as soon as it is done. BOTANICAL PAINTING - STROKEWORK STYLEJUNE 10 - 12, 2005 I have long been a fan of the botanical style of painting, made popular in the early 1800's by artists such as Pierre Jospeh Redouté. These beautiful realistic floral renditions are enjoying a revival in home decorating today.
I’ve designed three paintings (8" across by 10" high) which can be matted and framed in 11" by 14" frames - or paint them on your choice of unique surfaces. The optional flower titles are included as they are in botanical paintings, in a flowing Edwardian script. I hope you will join me as we paint Cyclamens, Clematis and the Jacobean Lily. DISCOVER YOUR COLOUR SENSEAUGUST 26 - 29 Normally I offer a colour course every two years. However we’ve had so many requests and such a long waiting list for this seminar from last year that we decided not to wait till 2006. Colour- the one thing we can’t paint without! Determine how to identify the properties of colour - value, intensity and temperature. Learn how to use these properties to create a center of interest and rhythmic flow through the painting. Discover the fun of using colour schemes as we paint a simple pattern in eight different colour schemes. At my request, Maison de BeL’art designed a set of 8 coasters (5" diameter) with their own container, perfect for this project. And they happen to match the 2004 Brush Stroke Clinic placemats! Or you can combine the eight designs in a poster, or come up with your own ideas for surfaces.

In our colour exercises you will learn how to mix over 400 colours - and how to change a bottled colour if it’s not quite what you want.

HIBISCUS, BIRD OF PARADISE AND HUMMINGBIRDSEPTEMBER 12 - 13 This two day project falls just after the Brush Stroke Clinic September 9 - 11. Perhaps you may want to do both sessions, or just do this one. There is much to learn in this beautiful tropical painting and I know you will enjoy the surprisingly easy technique I’ve developed for painting the Hummingbird. The vibrant colours are so striking on the dark background; it is a joy to paint every step of the way. I’ve painted this project on Coyote Woodworks P-150 large plaque. They are working on adapting this surface to a table top and also a Lazy Susan, which would be lovely. It requires a minimum surface size of 15" across X 14" high.

This painting could be a mate to the “Wild Rose and Poinsettia” project offered in my October 14 - 16 seminar.

Media: Acrylic ![]() CROWN IMPERIAL LILYThis is an ancient flower from the 1500's, originally from Turkey . A cluster of orange bell shaped flowers fall down from a central stock. It’s name may be derived from the crown of green leaves above the flowers. You will notice the strong left hand light source in this unusual painting. This is interesting to create, and is done with gradual changes of colour temperatures, values and intensities as the eye travels across the painting. Once again, Janet at Coyote Woodworks has worked with me to design a surface for this painting. It is a shelf with a vertical panel below that has a removable insert. As soon as I have the rest of this surface painted I will post a picture of it in the Studio Seminar section on my web site. It requires a surface with minimum dimensions of 10" across by 14.5" high. It also fits on the insert panel in Coyotes Lattice Tray. As always - the surface choice is up to you.

GLOWING STROKEWORK IRIS IN THE ROUNDOctober 17- 2005 Join us just for this class or stay on from the previous three day seminar. This project was developed for a magazine article in Japan , but when our students saw it here last fall they asked if I would teach it in a one day class. The ring of iris flowers, leaves and buds is painted in rich hues of gold and russet on a warm dark plum background. The surface I used is a Lazy Susan from Coyote Woodworks, order #P-149LS. I am sure it would adapt to many different surfaces with a minimum diameter of 14". |

HELAN BARRICK MDAJUNE 16 - 19 Media: Acrylic Skill Level: Intermediate Surface: Bring your own Cost: Canadian $595.00 / USA $500.00 |
Many of you may know that Helan had heart surgery in November. She is feeling great and is confident that our seminar will go ahead as planned. Helan and I decided that we will choose the projects after she gets the “go ahead” from her doctors later on this month. As soon as we have done that, I will send out another newsletter to let you know the pictures are on my web site.

Spring is hereThat is what I feel when I look at this beautiful painting. It shows us a glimpse of family life with two birds perched on a nest beside their nest with its tiny eggs inside. With soft colours and its horizontal design, Trudy has created a restful and serene effect. If you listen closely though, you can almost hear the birds discussing who will be in charge of the 2 am feedings! This pattern is 24"across by 6.5" high.

TRUDY BEARD CDAJUNE 24-26 Trudy is so versatile and paints many subjects, so it really was difficult to narrow it down to just three projects. I have heard from many students who praise her teaching skills, so I know this will be an enriching experience for you. I hope you enjoy the three very different projects that I have chosen for us to do. Media: Acrylic Skill Level: Intermediate Surface: Bring your own Cost: Canadian $375.00 / USA $315.00 |
Roses on a black trayTrudy is known for her style of rose painting which she looks forward to sharing with you. In class you will learn simple floral composition that will show you how to adapt roses to any surface. You will receive a rose worksheet which you can paint on top of - a great help when learning how roses are constructed. Of course she shares all of her “fixing” tricks. Pattern size is approximately 18" across by 13" high. In the afternoon Trudy will share a cheese cloth texture technique which you can do on another small surface - then decorate it with more roses!! |
Hollyhock LandscapeThis scene of a charming cottage with its winding path and majestic pine trees is framed with gold scrolls and delicate floral sprays. The blue sky is filled with fluffy white cloud. In the foreground is a small garden of hollyhocks. The pattern is 9" across by 12" high.

JOHNNIE LILIEDAHL |

SEPTEMBER 30 TO OCTOBER 2 OPHELIA - 20" X 24""Ophelia" was originally painted from a live model, using techniques that include a lightly sketched underpainting in monochrome, and direct painting immediately upon the drawing. Fresh brushwork is seen throughout the painting, with more fine detail on the face, and less in surrounding areas of the dress and background. This seminar is a good introduction to portrait painting. While there will be no live model to paint from, Johnnie will provide photographs of the original model so that the student will be able to work from an original source, and not just copy the completed painting. This allows for individual interpretation of the dress, hair and background, if you choose to follow the photographs more closely than the painting. It also shows how to use photographs as a primary resource in your own paintings. Johnnie will explain her techniques for using the particular qualities of transparent and opaque paint to their fullest extent in this painting to create the shiny silk of the dress and the reflective surface of the table. BOBBIE TAKASHIMA |
OCTOBER 21 - 23 |
We are heading into Bobbie’s favourite time of year with the scheduling for this seminar, so you can imagine that we are in for even more than the usual amount of merriment in her class! Bobbie’s technique is so relaxing and the effects she achieves with layering of paint through drybrushing and scumbling is just amazing.
Four Frosty FriendsBobbie has managed to combine Halloween, winter, Christmas and a froggy snowman into a painting that is so full of imagination, it just makes you smile. The pattern measures 13” across by 9” high. I love this project. |
Secret GardenA fluffy white flop eared bunny is nestled in a garden floor of foxglove and poppies. Her friend is a tiny pixie who is sharing a secret - or maybe telling her how to get to the carrot patch?!! The pattern measures 12” across by 8” high.
